A major change is coming to Walmart for senior citizens

Walmart is bringing back primary care centers just months after closing them down.

Humana Inc.’s healthcare services arm, CenterWell, is set to launch primary care centers for seniors in 23 Walmart Supercenter retail stores. These centers will be located in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, and Texas, and will occupy spaces formerly used by Walmart Health.

It is anticipated that the brick-and-mortar stores will open their doors in the initial months of 2025.

Sanjay Shetty, M.D., president of CenterWell, emphasized the organization’s dedication to delivering personalized, comprehensive, and accessible healthcare to seniors. He highlighted that almost 24 primary care centers under CenterWell’s banner are tailor-made for seniors, with each location’s design catering to their unique requirements. Patients can expect the same level of access and convenience that CenterWell clinics across the country have become known for, including specialized entrances and hassle-free parking.

The clinics will have a team of medical professionals, including board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, and medical assistants. In addition, there will also be care coaches, social workers, behavioral health specialists, and clinical pharmacists available to provide comprehensive care to patients.

CenterWell is expanding its reach beyond in-store clinics by opening senior-focused primary care centers near Walmart Supercenters in several major cities. These cities include Tampa/St. Petersburg, Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Kansas City.

Walmart made an announcement in May that it would shut down its in-store medical centers, which were first introduced five years ago. The closure of Walmart Health and Walmart Health Virtual Care centers was implemented in five states, while the company continued to run its almost 4,600 pharmacies and 3,000 vision centers.
