According to The Sun, In recent legal developments, a lawsuit has surfaced alleging that U-Haul experienced two significant data breaches—one in September 2022 and another in December 2023. The suit claims that an unauthorized third party accessed U-Haul’s files, which contained sensitive personal information, including names and driver’s license numbers.
Although U-Haul has denied any wrongdoing, the company has agreed to settle the matter for $5,085,000. Eligible U-Haul customers could receive approximately $100 as part of this settlement.
To qualify for the direct payment, individuals must have lived in California between November 5, 2021, and April 5, 2022, or around December 5, 2023—the time frame during which the breaches occurred. Additionally, claimants must have received a Notice of Recent Security Incident letter regarding the alleged breaches.
Those eligible for the settlement must submit their claims by October 15. The payout for each eligible claimant is expected to be around $100, although this amount may vary based on the remaining funds in the settlement account after covering class representative service awards, legal fees, and administrative costs.
A final approval hearing for the payout is set for October 23. Payments could be delayed if appeals arise following the final hearing. Officials have urged all involved to “be patient” as the process unfolds.
Other Notable Settlements
In addition to the U-Haul settlement, there are other notable financial opportunities for consumers. Costco shoppers in New York have until August 9 to file claims for a settlement related to “flushable” wipes. The retailer faces allegations that its Kirkland brand wipes, marketed as “flushable,” were not actually suitable for sewer or septic systems.
Consumers involved in the Costco settlement could receive payments ranging from at least $7.50 to up to $55.90 per household.
Furthermore, Cash App users who were victims of fraudulent transactions due to two data breaches have until November 18 to file claims for a share of a $15 million settlement. Eligible claimants could potentially receive up to $2,500.
What is a Class-Action Settlement?
Class-action lawsuits allow groups of individuals—known as “classes”—to join forces in legal action against a company or entity accused of wrongdoing. These lawsuits often address widespread issues such as pollution, discrimination, or false advertising, and extend to all class members who share similar grievances.
