IFD: A learner’s permit holder, 22, crashes a dealership car into an Indianapolis restaurant during a test drive

A 22-year-old driver with a learner’s permit smashed a local dealership’s car into a near east side restaurant while on a test drive Wednesday, nearly missing a person in an electric wheelchair and an inflatable tube guy, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

A car collided with a building at the El Paseo Catracho restaurant on Washington Street and Keystone Avenue at noon, prompting Indianapolis Fire Department crews to respond. The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) reported that the crash caused no injuries, but the building suffered significant structural damage.

According to officials, the driver in the incident was a 22-year-old woman who only had a learner’s permit. She was reportedly driving a dealership car with a licensed passenger inside.

According to the IFD, the woman told firefighters that she was turning right onto Washington Street from Keystone Avenue when she lost control and collided with the structure.

The IFD-provided security video of the event, displayed below, shows the automobile just missing a person in an electric wheelchair on the sidewalk and an inflatable tube guy outside the restaurant.

Officials reported that neither the driver nor the passenger sustained any injuries at the restaurant. The Indianapolis Metro Police Department is now investigating the crash, according to the IFD.
