The FDA has issued a Grade II recall for jarred tomato sauce due to improper processing

In the previous month, the FDA recalled the Hudson Harvest Tomato Basil Sauce due to the discovery of jars of the product being under-processed. Recently, the administration upgraded the recall to a “Grade II.”

On June 18, Hudson Harvest issued a voluntary recall due to jars that are experiencing swelling, leaking, or bursting.

According to a statement, there is a chance that the product may not have been processed adequately, which increases the risk of spoilage organisms or pathogens developing.

According to the FDA’s website, spoilage is primarily caused by the growth of microorganisms that can occur due to leakage or underprocessing. This leakage may result from can defects, punctures, or rough handling. In some cases, contaminated cooling water can seep through pinholes or poor seams, leading to the introduction of bacteria that can cause spoilage.

Hudson Harvest Tomato Basil Sauce Risk Level Elevated After Initial Recall

The recall classification of the product was recently elevated to Grade II by the FDA on July 11. This indicates that there is a likelihood of temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences if the product is used or exposed to, or the possibility of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

According to a spokesperson from the FDA in an email to Newsweek, the main concern regarding this issue is the potential presence of pathogenic bacteria that can lead to severe health consequences.

The tomato basil sauce that was impacted by the recall was distributed by Hudson Harvest in clear glass jars of 16 ounces. The jars have a distinct UPC number of 683720301567 and a lot number of 1042426. The UPC can be easily located above the bar code, while the lot number is printed on the side of the jar.

In May and June, the product was available for purchase in stores located in New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
