A man from Long Island has been accused of providing 4th of July fireworks to an 11-year-old child, which resulted in a fire that caused damage to not just his own home, but also his neighbor’s.
According to the police, there were multiple incidents related to fireworks that required their response on Thursday in both Nassau and Suffolk counties.
33-year-old Karamjit Singh from Levittown has been accused of several charges including arson, reckless endangerment, unlawfully selling fireworks to a minor, unlawfully possessing fireworks, and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to Nassau County Police, the individual provided the 11-year-old with fireworks and instructed them to ignite them, resulting in a malfunction and subsequent ignition of a nearby shed.
According to the authorities, the fire extended towards the residence of Singh situated on Red Maple Drive North, as well as his neighbor’s abode.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, but one of the residents renting Singh’s home was forced to evacuate, and both properties sustained significant damage from the incident.
4th of July fireworks lead to several injuries on Long Island
Fireworks on Long Island during the 4th of July celebrations resulted in injuries to five individuals and damage to numerous cars.
According to Suffolk County Police, they attended two incidents on Thursday evening, one in Port Jefferson and the other in Copiague.
According to authorities, a fireworks show at a residence on Foxrun Court in Port Jefferson drew a sizable crowd. However, one of the fireworks misfired, causing concern among the spectators. This incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m.
Several cars on the block sustained damage while four individuals, including an 8-year-old girl, suffered injuries.
According to authorities, two men aged 38 and 30 were treated for burns and a severe leg injury, and burns and a severed finger, respectively. In addition, a 30-year-old woman and an 8-year-old girl received medical attention for minor injuries.
A man in Copiague suffered serious injuries when a firework exploded in his hand. According to the police, the 21-year-old was attending a party on Trouville Road and was lighting fireworks when the incident occurred.
Fortunately, all the victims are predicted to recover from their injuries.
Fireworks blamed for thousands of injuries, fires each year
Suffolk County officials have issued a warning to the public regarding the risks associated with the transportation and use of fireworks in anticipation of the upcoming holiday. It is important to exercise caution and follow all necessary safety measures in order to prevent accidents and injuries.
Dominick Thorne, Legislative Chair for Fire Rescue and Emergency Services in Suffolk County, reported that firework injuries caused a staggering 9,700 injuries last year alone.
According to officials, sparklers are responsible for approximately 25% of all emergency room injuries. These seemingly harmless fireworks can reach temperatures ranging from 1,200 to 2,000 degrees, which is significantly higher than the temperature of a match, which is only 800 degrees.
According to Rudy Sunderman, Deputy Commissioner for Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services for Suffolk County, giving a child a sparkler is just as dangerous as giving them a match.
Last year in the U.S., fireworks were attributed to causing 19,000 fires, as Sunderman pointed out. Injuries were also a common result of fireworks mishaps.
To combat drunk driving and boating, the police have announced plans to increase enforcement efforts through undercover operations and extra patrols.
