Victim impact statements were cut short Tuesday when a fight broke out during the sentencing of Te’Bryis Robinson, who was convicted in the 2022 shooting death of 14-year-old TrenJ’vious Hutton at Towne East Mall.

Robinson, now 19, had pleaded no contest on July 12, 2024, to second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and aggravated battery. His sentencing, initially delayed in September after withdrawing his plea without following proper procedure, was rescheduled for Tuesday.

During the hearing, Hutton’s mother urged the judge to issue the maximum sentence. Tensions escalated when an argument between the victim’s and defendant’s families turned physical.

As deputies began escorting relatives out, a member of the victim’s family punched someone from Robinson’s side. More punches were thrown, and others joined the altercation before deputies and the victim’s mother intervened.

A child in a car seat was close to the scene but was safely removed with help from a deputy. It remains unclear if any arrests were made.

Both families were removed from the courtroom before sentencing concluded. Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said the sheriff’s office would review footage to determine if additional charges are warranted.

Robinson, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, was tried as an adult and sentenced to 255 months in prison.
