Woman Charged with Second-Degree Murder After Fatal Shooting in Midtown Kansas City

A woman has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action following a fatal shooting outside a Midtown Kansas City business on November 14, 2024. The victim, 34-year-old Waleed Shaban, was shot in the chest and later pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court documents, the Kansas City Police Department responded to the incident just after 1 p.m. on Linwood Boulevard. Upon arrival, 24-year-old Kandi Galaviz reportedly told officers, “I shot him,” and was taken into custody.

Witnesses and surveillance footage have provided key details about the altercation. A business employee told investigators that Galaviz arrived at the parking lot in a maroon Cadillac and briefly spoke with Shaban, asking him what time he was off work. The employee recalled that a verbal dispute soon escalated into a physical fight, during which Galaviz shot Shaban.

The driver of the Cadillac, who had transported Galaviz to the location, stated that she became angry when she discovered some of her belongings were missing, which led to the confrontation. The driver confirmed that Shaban pushed Galaviz to the ground during the struggle.

A witness, whose identity remains undisclosed, arrived just as the shooting occurred and performed CPR on Shaban until police arrived. Surveillance footage shows the Cadillac arriving at 12:27 p.m., with the altercation and shooting taking place within a matter of minutes.

Galaviz is currently being held at the Jackson County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
