Judge Orders Release of Body Camera Footage in Kansas City, Kansas, Police Shootings

A Platte County judge has ruled that body camera footage and other investigative materials from two fatal police shootings in Kansas City, Kansas, must be made public. Judge Myles Perry issued the decision Wednesday after hearing over 45 minutes of arguments regarding the case.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, had filed a lawsuit on October 17 against the Kansas City Police Department’s Board of Police Commissioners, seeking to keep the footage and records sealed. The KCPD, based in Missouri, was tasked with investigating the two shootings, which involved Kansas City, Kansas, police officers.

The cases in question involve Jon Anderton, 50, who was shot and killed in February 2023, and Amaree’ya Henderson, 25, who was fatally shot in April 2023. Judge Perry’s decision means that these records, including the body camera videos, will now be accessible to the public.
