18-Year-Old Killed, Mother Critically Injured in Crash En Route to Chiefs Game

They were driving to a Kansas City Chiefs game on Saturday when they were involved in a crash that left an 18-year-old dead and his mother in the intensive care unit.

About half a mile south of 5000 Road in Montgomery County, Megan Barnett and Connor Barba were operating a Hyundai northbound on two-lane US-169, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Joseph Savage, 45, was driving a Camaro south on US-169 when it crossed the center line and collided with the mother and son’s vehicle.

Barba tried to swerve to escape the approaching Camaro while driving, but the Hyundai was struck on the driver’s side.

On the spot, Barba and Savage were declared dead.

Barnett and Barba left their Norman home to celebrate Barba’s birthday by going to see the Kansas City Chiefs face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a mother-son team, according to FOX23’s news partner KOCO 5.

Barba’s uncle and Barnett’s brother, Colin Barnett, was interviewed by KOCO.

“He was a remarkable young man. He was really light. He was quite happy and had a wonderful smile. Colin remarked, “He loved to joke and laugh.”

Barba received the Chiefs game as a surprise birthday present.

“He really wanted to see Baker Mayfield play, and Megan, I think, wanted to see the Chiefs play, likely the Taylor Swift connection,” Colin added.

Colin claimed that Barba’s prompt intervention prevented his mother’s death.

“Connor slammed on the brakes as hard as he could after swerving to the right. Colin remarked, “Connor took the full force of the Camaro’s vehicle when he did that.”

According to Colin, Barnett is recuperating at a Tulsa hospital and should soon be discharged from the intensive care unit.

To pay for Barnet’s recuperation costs, the family launched a GoFundMe page. By clicking here, you can make a donation to the GoFundMe.
