On Thursday, a multi-vehicle incident on I-95 in Virginia slowed traffic and left a tractor-trailer smoking, but largely avoided disaster.

A reported crash involving numerous vehicles on October 24 temporarily closed all north and southbound lanes, resulting in the burning of several cars and a truck.

In Caroline County, the incident occurred between exits 110 and 104 at mile marker 108, causing traffic to back up in both directions for many miles.

The aftermath of the crash.

The DOT has changed the traffic signals in the Route 1 corridor in Caroline and Spotsylvania counties to reduce congestion.

Drivers with destinations south of the Fredericksburg area should utilize Route 301 or the most convenient alternate route, they said.

DOT officials warned that there will be “major” delays for southbound interstate traffic during the afternoon rush as they work to clear the site and investigate the crash, but they reopened northbound lanes during the cleanup.

Once the trucks have been removed, VDOT technicians will be able to analyze the pavement condition and guardrail damage and schedule repairs, according to officials. There is no reopening time available.
