Mother found guilty of killing her kids faces new charges for corresponding with filmmaker in prison

Susan Smith, the woman convicted nearly 30 years ago of killing her two children by driving into a South Carolina lake in October 1994, is facing new legal troubles.

Smith reported to the authorities that a man had carjacked her and stolen her car, which contained her two young sons strapped into their car seats.

A nationwide manhunt commenced.

Smith eventually confessed that she had driven the car into the lake with the intention of killing herself. She dashed out at the last minute.

An investigation revealed she was having an affair with a man who had made it obvious to her that he did not want children.

Smith received a life sentence for the killings of her boys.

On Monday afternoon, the South Carolina Department of Corrections informed Channel 9 that they had found her guilty of “communicating with a victim and/or witness” in jail.

The case “involved telephone calls with a documentary filmmaker about her crimes,” the SCDOC stated.

Smith “agreed to provide the filmmaker with contact information for friends, family, and victims,” including her ex-husband. According to the department, the filmmaker also made a deposit into Smith’s account.

Detainees in South Carolina cannot conduct telephone or in-person interviews.

They are able to write letters, nonetheless.

They denied Smith access to his phone, tablet, and canteen for 90 days.

Even though she received a life sentence in South Carolina at the time, she will have a parole hearing soon.
