Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has made the decision to deploy an Alabama National Guard team to provide assistance to the North Carolina areas that have been severely affected by Hurricane Helene.
The governor’s office announced that the team comprises 11 airmen from various parts of the state, in addition to a chaplain and chaplain’s assistant. These airmen make up Alabama’s Fatality Search and Recovery Team (FSRT).
According to a statement by Governor Ivey, Hurricane Helene has caused extensive damage reminiscent of a war zone. In light of this, Alabama is ready to offer assistance to its neighboring states as they begin their response and recovery efforts. Recognizing the severe impact on North Carolina, Governor Ivey has promptly directed the Alabama National Guard and other first responders to contribute to the search and rescue operations in the affected areas. She fervently prays for the safety and success of this team in their mission to save as many lives as possible amidst the devastation in North Carolina.
As the storm wreaked havoc, causing widespread flooding in several western North Carolina counties, the activation order for FSRT was issued. Shockingly, there are reports of over 1,000 missing individuals in the aftermath of this devastating event.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with those who have been most affected by this devastating storm,” expressed Major General David Pritchett, the Alabama National Guard Adjutant General. He further emphasized the preparedness and capabilities of the team, stating, “Our highly skilled and well-equipped team is dedicated to providing assistance and support. We stand united in prayer, hoping to rescue as many individuals as possible and bring solace to the families of those we have tragically lost.”
FSRT is part of the CERFP, a CBRNE Emergency Response Force Package operated by the Alabama National Guard. Additionally, Alabama has dispatched three swift water rescue teams alongside a cadaver dog team.
Ivey expressed her ongoing prayers for everyone affected by Hurricane Helene and expressed her readiness to provide further assistance.
