According to law enforcement officials, police found a dead baby abandoned in the bathroom of a Financial District restaurant Monday morning and are currently investigating the macabre mystery.
Police and sources discovered the child’s body, whose gender and age were not immediately known, inside the restroom at Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine on Fulton Street near Gold Street downtown just before 10 a.m.
Police arrived at a 911 call and discovered the baby unconscious and unresponsive, according to authorities.
EMS workers declared the infant dead at the scene, according to police.
“It’s horrific—it’s a baby,” a neighboring mom told The Post. “I’m assuming it’s someone who had no other choice.” They are probably desperate.
“This kind of stuff usually points to a systemic problem,” she told me. “Why would a mother of a small child feel compelled to do that? Why would she believe she had no other choice but to do that?
“That is dreadful.” I can’t believe it happened.”
Nito Ali, a deli worker nearby, said he provided NYPD officers with surveillance footage from his establishment.
“They requested camera footage for this store area…” “To see who just walks in and who isn’t the baby-dropper,” Ali said. “I honestly don’t know.
“It’s crazy, guy.” It comes from God.”
According to a lady identifying herself as Sophie’s assistant manager, cops allowed the eatery to remain open.
“Right now we don’t have any information,” she told me. “They are doing the investigation, and we know nothing.”
Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death, but it’s unclear whether they suspect criminality.
There have been no arrests made.
