A Mississippi Couple Has Been Apprehended For Installing Faulty Fire Suppression Systems In Counties Across The State

A couple from Mississippi has been taken into custody on charges of allegedly installing defective and second-hand fire suppression systems in numerous commercial kitchens across a minimum of 13 counties in the state.

Daniel and Sherri Finnegan were arrested on Wednesday, August 21, and were subsequently placed in the Smith County Jail. They are currently being charged with false pretense and violations of the Mississippi Fire Prevention Code.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO), the Finnegans had installed systems that were not functional or tested prior to being put into service. This poses significant risks in the event of a fire. In addition, Daniel Finnegan is being accused of falsely labeling fire extinguishers as tested. He allegedly repainted and replaced parts on used extinguishers and sold them as new.

The Finnegans ran their business, Finnegan’s Fire Safety Equipment, from Pelahatchie without officially registering it with the Secretary of State. According to reports, they served clients ranging from daycares to various businesses throughout the state.

The SFMO, in collaboration with Smith County deputies, conducted a search warrant at the residence of the couple on Thursday morning. The evidence collected during the operation has resulted in the pending of over 50 additional charges in various counties, including Adams, Covington, Hinds, Jones, and others.

If you have purchased systems from the Finnegans, the authorities urge you to contact the SFMO at 601-359-1061.

Affected businesses can take advantage of the office’s resources to replace their faulty systems with new and compliant equipment.
