New York State Lawmakers Renew Effort to Pass Controversial Measure New York State Lawmakers Renew Effort to Pass Controversial Measure

New York state lawmakers are once again pushing a proposal that The New York Post calls a “controversial measure.” As the state budget stretches further past its due date, the deadlock between New York Governor Kathy Hochul and other elected officials shows little sign of breaking, according to The Gothamist.

Some state politicians believe the measure has enough votes to pass, with The Post reporting that discussions have taken place extensively behind closed doors.

This isn’t the first attempt to pass such a bill. According to SI Live, similar proposals were first introduced in the New York State Senate in 2015. City and State NY noted that the bill has now failed to pass for nearly ten years.

Lawmakers Again Push for Legalizing Assisted Suicide

The New York Post reports that state lawmakers are once again proposing to legalize assisted suicide for New Yorkers. The bill would allow a “mentally competent, terminally ill adult with six months or less to live to request a fatal cocktail of drugs from a doctor,” according to The Post.

The bill was last struck down in June 2024, with the New York State Senate reporting that the “Medical Aid in Dying Act failed to advance through the state legislature for the fifth-straight time.”

Similar laws are already in place in ten other states, including New Jersey, Vermont, and Maine. A 2015 poll posted by End of Life Choices New York,  showed that 77% of state residents support allowing terminally ill individuals to choose to end their lives.
