TEXAS – Texas Border Patrol officers at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility intercepted $8.9 million worth of methamphetamine hidden in a shipment labeled as chayote, also known as vegetable pear. This green, pear-shaped squash hails from Mexico.
On April 13, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stopped a tractor trailer entering from Mexico. During a secondary inspection with a canine unit, officers uncovered the methamphetamine.
Officers spent most of the day removing 3,770 packages containing a total of 1,002 pounds (454.5 kg) of meth, all hidden inside the chayote shipment.
CBP, and Homeland Security Investigations seized the narcotics and vehicle special agents have initiated a criminal investigation.
The identity of the driver was not released by Border Patrol officers.
“Our CBP officers continue to take down load after load of harmful narcotics, illustrating the tireless work of securing our border and safeguarding our communities,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.
