Wichita Police announced an arrest following the shooting of a 4-year-old girl inside a southeast Wichita business.
Officers arrested a 50-year-old woman, identified as Ana Sorto through Sedgwick County Jail records, on charges of Aggravated Child Endangerment.
The incident happened around 1:50 p.m. on April 11 at a business in the 2500 block of E. Harry. When officers arrived, they found the young girl with a gunshot wound to her lower torso. As of Saturday morning, she remains in critical condition.
Investigators determined that the child’s guardian had left a firearm unsecured, and the girl accessed it, accidentally shooting herself.
The case is being referred to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide on formal charges.
Police emphasized the importance of safe gun storage, reminding gun owners of their responsibility to keep firearms secure. Wichita Police offer free gun locks at all local substations, available with no questions asked.
