At least two Michigan women have been arrested by immigration authorities after reporting crimes to local law enforcement, sparking concerns among experts about potential consequences.

ICE Raids Home to Make Arrest

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents reportedly detained both women under increased pressure from the Trump administration to ramp up immigration-related arrests and deportations.

In one instance, a local police officer allegedly tipped off federal authorities about a woman’s immigration status. However, in the second case, police deny notifying anyone about the individual.

Arrest of Veronica Ramirez Verduzco

One of the arrested women, 49-year-old mother of two Veronica Ramirez Verduzco, filed a police report in February in Van Buren Township, claiming she had been assaulted by a coworker.

Last week, unmarked officers broke her car window and forcibly removed her before detaining her on immigration-related charges, according to her court-appointed lawyer, Lisa Dwyer, as reported by the Detroit Free Press reports.

Authorities state that Ramirez Verduzco lacks legal status in the U.S. and had previously been subject to deportation. She remains in custody while awaiting further legal proceedings.

Despite the arrest, Van Buren Township Police insist they did not alert federal authorities to her immigration status.
