The Garden City Commission has officially labeled a rundown motel as “unsafe and dangerous.”

During Tuesday’s Garden City Commission meeting, the city passed a resolution granting the owner of the Dusty Trail Inn a deadline of May 20th to either demolish the building or carry out necessary repairs. Failure to comply with this deadline would result in the city taking action to remove the building.

The motel has been closed due to extensive damage caused by in arson fires in 2022. As per the city, the owner of the motel has been engaged in a long legal battle with his insurance company following the incidents.

A devastating fire early Thursday completely destroyed the Nickerson family’s home.

Built in 1980, the 60-room motel has undergone significant damage from water, resulting in collapsed floors. Due to multiple break-ins, the first floor has been boarded up, and there is a concern of further collapse according to a city report.

The city’s declaration enables them to proceed with the demolition of the building if the property owner fails to meet the May deadline.
