On Friday, January 3rd, an accident in Finney County resulted in the injury of two individuals from Satanta and the tragic death of a Garden City woman.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. on Friday near the intersection of U.S. Highway 83 and Parallel Road, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. The vehicles involved were a 2019 Ford F550 and a 2014 Chevy Equinox, both traveling southbound on Hwy. 83.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), a 2014 F250 was traveling northbound on Hwy. 83 when the driver of the Equinox in front of it slowed down to make a left turn onto Parallel Road. As a result, the F550 rear-ended the Chevy, causing it to be pushed into the northbound lane. Additionally, the F250 collided with the driver’s side of the Equinox. Both the F550 and Equinox came to a stop on the roadway, while the F250 came to rest in the ditch northeast of the intersection.

Elizabeth L. Gossman, a 43-year-old resident of Garden City, tragically lost her life in the accident. Despite wearing her seat belt, she sustained fatal injuries as the driver of the Chevy.

Ariel Gossman, 14, from Garden City, who was a passenger in the Equinox, was transported to St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City due to a possible minor injury. It is worth noting that she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the incident.

58-year-old Jon R. Ungles of Satanta was driving the F250 when the accident occurred. He and his passenger, 52-year-old Catrina L. Ungles, were taken to St. Catherine’s Hospital with suspected minor injuries. It is worth noting that both individuals were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

The driver of the F550, 23-year-old Cesar H. Pena from Lakin, was transported to St. Catherine’s Hospital. However, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), he did not appear to have any injuries. It was reported that he was wearing his seat belt during the incident.
