Beginning January 1, 2025, Kansans will no longer pay state sales tax on their groceries, thanks to a voter-approved plan aimed at reducing the tax burden. The three-year initiative, passed in 2022, eliminates the 2% state sales tax on food purchases, though city and county taxes will still apply, ranging from 0.01% to 2%.

This move comes in response to rising grocery prices, which saw a dramatic 25% increase from 2019 to 2023, according to the USDA. The elimination of the state sales tax is expected to provide some financial relief to shoppers across Kansas.
