The number of abortions sought by out-of-state residents in Kansas saw a significant increase of 78% in 2023. This surge can be attributed to the near-total abortion bans implemented in neighboring states. Among the non-Kansas residents seeking abortions, Oklahoma had the second-highest number of cases.
The annual summary of vital statistics from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reveals that out-of-state residents accounted for 15,111 abortions last year, whereas Kansas residents underwent 4,356 abortions. The state experienced a 58% surge in the number of abortions compared to the previous year.
Oklahoma residents accounted for 3,283 of those abortions, with 64 of them being performed on individuals under 18 years old. The state ranked second, trailing behind Texas, where residents obtained 7,606 abortions in Kansas.
Planned Parenthood responded to the growing demand by launching a new clinic in southeast Kansas in August. This strategic move brings their services closer to areas such as Tulsa, northwest Arkansas, and southwest Missouri, offering easier access to healthcare for individuals in these regions compared to the organization’s Wichita clinic.
