As bird flu cases increase across the U.S., Kansas farmers are taking extra measures to protect their livestock, particularly poultry, from the disease. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks reports a rise in bird flu outbreaks among wild populations, particularly light geese, which has raised concerns for the commercial poultry industry.
Devin Griffith, of Griffith Family Farms, is focusing on keeping his chickens away from wild birds that might carry the virus. He ensures the chickens stay away from ponds and areas frequented by geese and provides them with fresh, uncontaminated water and plenty of minerals. Griffith also maintains clean coops and changes bedding regularly to minimize the risk of infection.
While no cases have been reported on his farm, Griffith remains vigilant, looking for signs of illness such as coughing, congestion, and lethargy in his chickens. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks urges people who spot sick birds to report them without handling the animals.
