Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has announced a new round of funding under the Advancing Digital Opportunities to Promote Technology (ADOPT) program, offering $10.7 million to improve internet access in underserved communities.
Applications for the funding will open on Thursday, Dec. 12, and are aimed at expanding public Wi-Fi and providing digital devices to those without internet access. The program offers two categories of funding: Equipment Distribution, which has a maximum award of $500,000 and requires a 2% match and 1% co-investment, to provide long-term loans for computers, laptops, and tablets; and Public Wi-Fi, with a maximum award of $1 million and requiring a 5% match and 2% co-investment, to establish reliable internet access in public spaces.
Lieutenant Governor David Toland emphasized the impact of the program on improving job skills, telehealth access, and opportunities for remote work. The Kansas Office of Broadband Development (KOBD) will collaborate with local governments, educational institutions, and community organizations to ensure that the funds are used effectively.
KOBD Interim Director Joseph Le noted the success of the first round of funding and expects the second round to further propel Kansas toward greater digital connectivity. To assist applicants, KOBD will host a webinar on Wednesday, Dec. 11, to discuss funding priorities and application guidelines.
