Democrat Brandon Woodard of Lenexa has made history as the first openly LGBTQ individual to lead either party in the Kansas Legislature, following his election as House minority leader. At just 34, Woodard will guide the Democratic caucus, which faces reduced numbers due to Republican gains in the 2024 elections.
Woodard emphasized his commitment to key issues, including public education funding and fiscal stability, stating, “I’m ready to get back to work for Kansans.” His election marks a significant moment for LGBTQ representation in Kansas politics, building on his groundbreaking 2018 election as one of the state’s first openly LGBTQ legislators.
Despite Republican supermajorities, Woodard aims to mount an “effective opposition,” working to secure bipartisan support to uphold Governor Laura Kelly’s vetoes on contentious issues like Medicaid expansion.
Equality Kansas praised Woodard’s leadership as a milestone for LGBTQ visibility, with Policy Director Taryn Jones highlighting its inspirational impact on aspiring young politicians.
On the Republican side, Dan Hawkins of Wichita was re-elected as Speaker of the House, ensuring a strong conservative stance in the upcoming legislative session.
