The developer of the Grain Belt Express line, a project aimed at transporting wind-powered electricity from Southwest Kansas to Illinois via Missouri and Indiana, has received conditional loan approval from the government. The loan guarantee, totaling nearly $5 billion, marks a significant step forward for the 800-mile-long transmission line.
The Energy Department’s Loan Program Office has announced a conditional loan guarantee of $4.9 billion. However, this guarantee’s approval is subject to the completion of an environmental review and to meeting other technical, environmental, and financial requirements.
According to Politico, the loan will finance the initial phase of the 2,500-megawatt project, which will span 578 miles from Kansas to central Missouri.
