Border Patrol agents were ecstatic to hear the news of President Donald Trump’s re-election earlier this month. Over the past four years, their morale had plummeted as nearly 11 million migrants entered the porous US border illegally under Joe Biden’s administration.
However, with the change in leadership on January 20th, their marching orders will shift. Paul Perez, the president of the National Border Patrol Council, expressed the overwhelming sense of relief and anticipation among Border Patrol agents during an appearance on the WOR Morning Show.
During an interview with Larry Mendte, Perez expressed his surprise at discovering that some Border Patrol agents are reconsidering their decision to retire early. He revealed that he personally knows several agents who have requested to return to duty, and others who had planned to retire if Kamala Harris had won the election. These agents were concerned about working under an administration that might hinder their ability to fulfill their sworn duty.
Perez emphasized that the Border Patrol now feels optimistic about the future due to the support they anticipate receiving from President Trump and his administration. He also praised Tom Homan, who has over 30 years of experience in this field, for his expertise and hands-on approach in leading the agency. Perez highlighted that Homan is not just a figurehead but someone who actively understands the job and is capable of providing effective guidance.
According to Perez, the Border Patrol has experienced a stark contrast in support between Trump and Biden. Perez states that since his re-election, Trump has provided unwavering support to the Border Patrol. In contrast, Biden immediately dismantled the policies implemented by Trump to secure the border upon taking office.
Perez expresses disappointment in the lack of apology from the Biden administration for the false claims made about agents on horseback allegedly whipping Haitian migrants. The continuous disappointments have taken a toll on the morale of the Border Patrol, as they went from a period of great optimism to enduring the lowest of lows, with an apology still pending.
