Mother accused of leaving toddler home alone for a date out of town

According to authorities in Texas, a woman from the state was arrested for purposely leaving her 16-month-old child unattended while she traveled out of town to meet a man she had connected with on a dating app.

In the morning of July 28th, the police responded to a welfare check at an apartment on West Hallmark Avenue in Killeen. The apartment is located in a large city about 70 miles north of Austin. A spokesperson for the Killeen Police Department confirmed this information to Law&Crime.

According to a statement from the department, officers were alerted to the presence of a child near a broken window, with an aggressive dog attempting to attack the child. When the officers arrived at the scene, they witnessed a child sticking out of a window that had been temporarily fixed with a combination of plexiglass sheeting and cardboard. Fortunately, the window was not shattered.

According to the police department’s account of the search, officers discovered that the child was alone in the apartment, except for two dogs. They immediately contacted the mother of the child, who informed them that she had been in San Antonio since the previous day.

San Antonio is located approximately 160 miles to the south-southwest of Killeen.

After the incident, the child was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Following the necessary medical assessments, the child was entrusted into the care of state Child Protective Services for further protection and support.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Waco-based Fox affiliate KWKT, when the police contacted Myers, she reportedly stated that she had come to the Alamo City to visit a man she had met on Hinge.

According to the mother’s statement to the police, she entrusted her child to a babysitter she had connected with on Facebook. Consequently, law enforcement decided to investigate further and inquire about the incident from the supposed babysitter.

The police officers went on to speak with the babysitter, who informed them that she had babysat for the suspect in December of last year and hadn’t had any contact with her since then. To support her claim, she showed the officers her Facebook messages, which revealed that there were no messages exchanged between her and the suspect after December 2023.

Law enforcement officials also noted that the house was arranged and configured in a manner that indicated Myers had intended to leave her son by himself.

Precautions were taken to ensure safety, with most doors closed off and a baby gate blocking the kitchen area. The deadbolt on the door was locked, and every other window was secured and shut. However, it seems that one window was left makeshift-closed, as the boy was seen hanging out of it.

The police department instructed the mother to go back to Killeen, according to officers.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office arrested Myers on November 5 after allegedly not obliging the request.

According to the arrest records in California, the defendant was apprehended on the vast Fort Irwin Army Base, which is approximately 1,365 miles away from Killeen.

On Tuesday, Myers was released from custody in California and subsequently arrested by the Killeen Police Department.
