A woman involved in a significant animal cruelty operation earlier this year has been sentenced to two weeks in jail.
Desiree Therrien was recently sentenced on Friday, Nov. 15 for her involvement in a significant animal abuse case. According to court records, she faced four counts of animal cruelty and entered a plea of no contest to these charges. The court has also imposed a ban on Therrien owning any animals; however, she is still allowed to visit relatives who have animals.
On January 30, 2024, authorities from the Topeka police department and the Helping Hands Humane Society (HHHS) joined forces to rescue several animals from a residence located in the 1400 block of Southwest Fillmore Street. This joint effort was prompted by multiple reports of animal abuse that had been received by the authorities.
Topeka Police Department (TPD) officers made a shocking discovery when they found a total of 91 animals in a house. Among them, 73 were alive, but unfortunately, 18 had already perished. The animals were living in deplorable conditions, lacking access to basic necessities such as food and clean water. Thankfully, the Humane Society stepped in to  rescue numerous animals and provide them with new, safe homes.
Charles Solomon, who is also linked to this case, pleaded guilty to all 26 charges of animal cruelty and was sentenced to a one-year jail term on Friday, October 4th.
