The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) has officially launched the application period for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), aimed at helping qualifying residents with their winter heating bills. The program, which opened on November 18, offers a one-time annual benefit to eligible households.
As winter temperatures begin to dip, heating costs are expected to rise, and many families may find it difficult to keep up with the added expense. “Kansas winters can be harsh and unpredictable. When temperatures fall, heating bills rise,” said Laura Howard, Secretary of DCF. “By opening the LIEAP application period in mid-November, we hope to provide families with the support they need to cover those higher heating costs and stay warm in their homes.”
In 2024, over 40,000 households in Kansas received an average benefit of $645 through the program.
To qualify, households must have an adult responsible for the heating costs, and applicants must meet the income threshold of 150% of the federal poverty level. The benefit amount varies based on factors such as income, household size, type of residence, heating fuel used, and local utility rates.
Kansas residents who wish to apply or check their eligibility can visit the Department for Children and Families’ official website for more information.
