Identification made by authorities in police shooting incident in Independence involving mother and infant

Last Thursday, an Independence  police shooting tragically claimed the lives of an infant and her mother. The authorities have now identified the victims.

According to a spokesperson for the Blue Springs Police Department, Destinii Hope, who was born in August, and Maria Pike, 34, tragically lost their lives in the incident.

The incident occurred at one of the apartment units at the Oval Springs Apartments, which are situated near Larkspur Lane and Missouri 291.

Police responded to a call regarding a domestic disturbance at the apartment around 1:45 p.m.

Officials have confirmed that an officer discharged his weapon, although the cause of death for both Pike and the baby girl has not been disclosed by the police.

According to the police, an individual who was part of the incident owned a knife. However, further information regarding this matter has not been disclosed.

The Eastern Jackson County Police Involved Incident Team, which consists of multiple agencies that take turns investigating police shootings, is leading the investigation.

The Blue Springs Police Department is overseeing the investigation in this case.

The department spokesperson mentioned that investigators are currently reviewing various camera footage, including both dash cameras and surveillance cameras from the apartment complex.

The department has announced that two officers who were involved in the incident have been placed on leave.
