Kansas Lawmakers Start Early on 2025 State Budget Planning

Kansas lawmakers are taking early action in the preparation of the state’s budget for the upcoming year.

In October, a new committee was formed with the aim of revamping the conventional procedure through which the governor and state agencies develop the budget and subsequently present a draft for lawmakers to assess in January.

The committee aims to provide lawmakers with a head start in developing their own draft budget before the legislature reconvenes.

Lawmakers on the committee convened for their inaugural meeting on Friday, where they diligently examined the budget requests put forth by various state agencies and boards responsible for public safety, human services, agriculture, and natural resources.

According to Rep. Troy Waymaster, the Chair of the Special Committee on Legislative Budget, that’s only the start.

According to Waymaster, upcoming meetings will delve into more detailed budgets. Additionally, the Consensus Revenue Estimate groups will convene on November 20, providing further insights into the agencies’ requests and our current financial standing.

The Consensus Revenue Estimate projects the state general fund revenue.

The committee plans to hold at least four additional meetings before lawmakers reconvene on January 13th.
