Former Kansas attorney general emerges victorious in Congressional race

Former Kansas attorney general, Derek Schmidt, emerged victorious in a remarkable political comeback as he secured the opportunity to represent the Second Congressional District of the Sunflower State. This comes as Congressman Jake LaTurner decided not to pursue a second term, leaving the seat open for Schmidt to seize.

Republican Derek Schmidt, who made a comeback to the political arena following his unsuccessful bid for governor in 2022, emerged victorious over former Congresswoman Nancy Boyda, a Democrat seeking to reclaim the seat she previously held in the 2000s. Libertarian candidate John Hauer also participated in the race. It’s worth noting that the district has undergone changes since Boyda’s tenure, due to redistricting.

The Second Congressional District of Kansas encompasses a significant portion of eastern Kansas, excluding the Kansas City metro region. This district comprises both urban and rural areas, with a particular focus on southeast Kansas. Historically, this part of the state has faced challenges related to economic underdevelopment.

Schmidt is expected to hold his position for a minimum of two years, coinciding with U.S. House elections that take place during both presidential and midterm election years.

Late on Tuesday night, Boyda officially conceded, providing the following statement:

Earlier tonight, I reached out to Derek and gracefully conceded in our race. I extended my best wishes to him and expressed my hope that he would attentively consider all perspectives as he tackles the difficult questions that will confront the next Congress. I sincerely wish him the very best as our upcoming Representative.

“I truly believe that our democracy will flourish if the next Congress takes a more dedicated approach to governance and puts aside the divisive rhetoric that has been causing so much division among us.”
