Man from Wichita receives sentence for involvement in 2023 shooting near church

Demetrius Carter, the individual who admitted guilt in August for two counts of endangering a child in connection with a shooting incident outside a Wichita church, received a two-year prison sentence on Monday.

The 20-year-old Carter will serve a consecutive sentence of nine years and eight months. This sentence is in addition to his previous sentence of 92 months for ramming a police car.

Carter faced six charges, including two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of criminal damage to property. However, after pleading guilty to the child endangerment charges in August, the other charges against him were dropped.

On June 16, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded outside New Life Church on North Oliver. It was during a funeral service that Carter, who had been turned away, resorted to violence and started firing shots at the crowd. In a moment of self-defense, some individuals from the crowd retaliated, managing to wound Carter in his right forearm. Thankfully, no other casualties were reported.
