A Lakin couple from Kansas, has recently been charged with the alleged embezzlement of funds from the Deerfield Cemetery.
Last week, Dakota Williams, 38, and Samantha Williams, 34, were taken into custody and later released on bail.
On May 20, the Kearny County Sheriff’s Office sought assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to look into alleged crimes committed by the former cemetery treasurer.
According to the complaint forms filed at the Kearny County Courthouse, both Dakota and Samantha Williams face charges for seven alleged crimes.

- Count 1 — Misuse of public funds. The charge alleges the defendant was a custodian or person having control of public money by virtue of the defendant’s official position and unlawfully allowed another to use the public money.
- Counts 2 through 6 — Theft. One count alleges the theft of $4,000 from Cemetery District 3, Deerfield. One alleges the theft of $3,000. The other four counts allege the theft of $2,000.
Both suspects have posted $25,000 bonds and have been scheduled to appear in court on November 26th.
