For raping a resident, a former staff of a nursing home in Overland Park will receive a sentence of more than 17 years in jail.
On October 23, Johnson County District Court sentenced Olathe resident Samuel M. Wambugu, 66, to 208 months in prison for the rape and abuse of a dependent adult.
The sentence, which includes 165 months for the rape conviction and an additional 43 months for the allegation of abuse of a dependent adult, was imposed by Judge Christina Dunn Gyllenborg. The sentences will follow one another.
The lawsuit is related to a purported rape of an 85-year-old resident of a nursing home on January 21, 2022.
A nursing facility called The Heritage of Overland Park focuses on caring for elderly patients who have dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
According to a Kansas City Star report that cited court documents, the incident was reported after a Heritage coworker saw Wambugu in her room partially nude and with his pants down.
Fearing that Wambugu would retaliate against her if she notified anybody right away, the coworker told authorities about the assault the next day and reported it to the nursing home administration, according to the Star.
The victim was checked for rape at a nearby hospital after the incident was reported. She remembered that a man named Wambugu had attacked her as she was on the verge of falling asleep.
The woman described the encounter as “awful and gross” and said she felt violated.
Wambugu was then taken into custody at the Johnson County jail on February 4, 2022. A request for comment on the sentence was not answered by Heritage of Overland Park.
