The NYPD said they identified a person of interest in the alleged attempted rape of a woman in Central Park on Saturday morning.
We have not yet disclosed any details about the person of interest.
At 5:10 a.m. on Saturday, the attack occurred near 85th and East Drive, close to the renovated Lasker Rink and pool.
According to the NYPD, the suspect approached the 38-year-old woman, threw her over a metal fence, and repeatedly punched her in the face before trying to rape her.
According to officers, the man then exited the park on a bicycle, riding northbound on 5th Avenue.
First responders transferred the victim to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
While New Yorkers are careful not to place blame on the victim, some were concerned that she was out after dark.
“I would not be here at 5:00 a.m. or as soon as it started becoming dark,” homeowner Nancy Moore said. “I am on my way home because it is no longer safe to be out here after dark.”
This summer, another woman fought off a would-be rapist while trying to sunbathe in Central Park. The case resulted in an arrest. The two crime scenes were located relatively close to each other on the northern end of the city’s crown jewel.
“I believe it is always a good idea to walk with someone, especially when the sun is not out, because you never know what will happen,” said parkgoer Michaela Barratt.
Anyone with information regarding this event should call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
