After a five-day trial, the jury found an Indiana man guilty of killing one of four members of a Kansas family when he drove into them.
Trey Jones perished in the crash. His daughter, a former Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball recruit, suffered a catastrophic brain injury and had to medically retire from the sport before she could play for the Hawkeyes.
Amy, Ava’s mother, was also severely injured and required several surgeries.
On Monday, a jury convicted Michael Hurley of murder, assault, and DUI.
Prosecutors claim Hurley was high on fentanyl when he collided with the Jones family as they strolled through downtown Louisville in July 2022.
On Tuesday morning, a jury recommended 75 years in jail for Hurley.
According to WAVE News in Louisville, Kentucky, Hurley has a history of criminal activity.
In 2023, Indiana found Hurley guilty of felony narcotics charges. He obtained a suspended sentence and is now on probation. In this case, the prosecution intends to use the Indiana accusations as a sentencing increase, which might affect his parole eligibility.
