Sarah Matthews, who previously served as a spokesperson for former President Trump, expressed her support for Vice President Harris on Monday, emphasizing her determination to prevent the former president from returning to the Oval Office.
During an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Matthews expressed the belief that simply speaking out against her former boss was not sufficient. She emphasized the importance of taking the next step and demonstrating that it is acceptable to set aside partisanship and prioritize the well-being of the country.
She explained to Mitchell that her endorsement of Kamala Harris was driven by her belief that it is crucial to take every possible measure to prevent Donald Trump from occupying the Oval Office again.
Matthews attended an event in Pennsylvania last week with former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and other ex-Trump White House officials Alyssa Farah Griffin and Cassidy Hutchinson. These four women, who were once strong supporters of the former president, have now become some of the most vocal critics of the GOP presidential nominee.
According to Cheney, she shares a similar belief with Matthews that Trump poses a significant threat to democracy. In fact, she mentioned in late 2022 that the events of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots further solidified this concern, which played a role in her decision to step down.
When asked about whether she has experienced threats or harassment since leaving the Trump administration, Matthews confirmed that she has indeed faced such challenges. She explained that she carefully assessed the potential risks involved and ultimately concluded that it was necessary to speak out against the GOP nominee.
“But what scared me even more was the prospect of a second Trump term. I couldn’t bear the thought of staying silent and not using my voice to discourage people from voting for him again,” she explained. “So, for me, it was a straightforward decision.”
