Talecka Brown, a 32-year-old mother from Maryland, has been arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder for reportedly shooting her 13-year-old daughter.
The disturbing occurrence occurred on September 23, when police reacted to allegations of a shooting at the family’s residence in Seat Pleasant, Maryland.
According to a statement from the Seat Pleasant Police Department, police arrived at the scene to find a teenage girl with an upper body gunshot wound.
Authorities sent her to a local hospital in critical condition. According to authorities, Brown shot her daughter with a pistol in the residence after an argument turned physical.
According to court filings, the 13-year-old girl informed police that her mother shot her as she walked down the stairs following their dispute.
The child allegedly said Brown told her to lie to authorities by claiming an intruder had broken into the house and shot her. When police got to the scene, they discovered inconsistent testimonies from Brown.
On Tuesday, September 24, Brown faced charges for first-degree attempted murder and other offenses.
The following day, she appeared in court and requested home detention, but the judge denied her request. The judge ordered Brown’s detention without bond.
As of Wednesday, Sept. 25, the teen victim was apparently stable and able to walk around her hospital unit, though doctors are still afraid that her damage will result in paralysis.
The emotional damage from this violent occurrence is likely to have long-term consequences.
Ashley Sowls, Assistant Prince George’s County State’s Attorney, claimed that during a jailhouse phone call to the girl’s father, Brown displayed little concern for her daughter’s welfare.
Instead, Brown suggested dropping the charges in the event that their daughter did not show up for court.
The next court date for Talecka Brown is October 25, but she has not yet entered a plea.
