Five children ranging from 11 to 15 years old were apprehended after attempting to flee police in a stolen automobile linked to armed robberies and other crimes, authorities said.
Working with New Haven Police, East Haven police responded to Laurel Street and Eldred Drive approximately noon on Monday, Oct. 7, to assist in the recovery of a reported stolen red Hyundai.
According to officials, East Haven Detective Jon Trinh noticed the automobile circling the Millbrook Plaza parking lot on Foxon Road. However, when police attempted to pull over the Hyundai, the driver reportedly floored it.
Police from New Haven and East Haven pursued the vehicle as it ran stop signs and lights and went the wrong way along one-way streets, according to police.
An East Haven officer terminated the chase by “disabling” their automobile with his cruiser. The children fled, but police apprehended them immediately, officials said.
East Haven police charged them all with vehicle theft and interfering with an officer.
Police released the children to their guardians and issued a summons to appear in juvenile court. Police sent one youngster to a hospital for treatment after a New Haven cop used pepper spray on him during his arrest.
East Haven police said they are unable to share their names or the dash cam video of the chase due to their age.
The case is still being investigated.
