The Food Bank of Delaware is sending supplies to Hurricane Helene survivors

The Food Bank of Delaware is coordinating a shipment of goods from Delaware to hurricane-ravaged communities in North Carolina and Florida.

On Monday, Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long worked with Food Bank and Feeding America personnel to load over 1,000 pounds of infant formula, 18 pallets of bottled water, and meal boxes. The state’s free infant formula distribution program provides this newborn formula during a nationwide formula shortage.

“The food bank that we’re sending these supplies to—the actual physical structure of that food bank—is gone,” Food Bank of Delaware CEO Cathy Kanefsky stated. “So just to think about what that community is needing and what they’re going through, our hearts break, our hearts grieve, and our hearts are with them; we’re so thankful for the opportunity to send supplies to them.”

Delaware, along with many other states, is partnering with Feeding America to help communities ravaged by Hurricane Helene. Feeding America, a national network of food banks, meal programs, and food pantries, is coordinating disaster help in affected communities.

Hall-Long urged Delawareans to constantly prepare for disasters at home and to volunteer, contribute, and get involved with organizations like the Food Bank of Delaware and Feeding America.

“It just shows when a small state like Delaware can step up and be that true first state and show their modeling to this community and to this country of what one can do when one puts a collective of good-minded volunteers and community partners together,” according to her.
