Michelle Fiore illegally requested funds for a memorial to a slain Las Vegas police officer, which she spent on personal expenses such as her daughter’s wedding, rent, and plastic surgery.
Six charges of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud found Fiore guilty. Each offense carries a potential sentence of twenty years in prison.
According to news sources, Fiore’s attorney plans to evaluate the potential of an appeal. They have scheduled the sentencing for January 6.
Fiore entered the 2022 Nevada governor’s election and even purchased advertising promoting her candidacy on a Florida television channel that Donald Trump could view, but she backed out and ran for state treasurer, losing in the primary.
The Nye County commissioners named her justice of the peace, and she resigned from the Las Vegas City Council. She was suspended as justice of the peace after being arrested.
The Associated Press reports that Fiore received more than $70,000 for the statue of a Las Vegas police officer shot and killed in the line of duty in 2014.
“Michele Fiore used a tragedy to line her pockets,” federal prosecutor Dahoud Askar stated.
The 54-year-old was a member of the Nevada Legislature from 2012 to 2016, and she made news for posing with guns and her family on Christmas cards. She served as a councilwoman in Las Vegas from 2017 to 2022.
