As the Florida Senate race becomes more uncertain and political parties make their last-minute maneuvers before November, it appears that every action taken by a state politician will face heightened scrutiny in the coming weeks. One recent incident that has garnered attention is the revelation that Republican Matt Gaetz allegedly attended a party in 2017 that involved drugs and a minor, which has had a negative impact on his reelection campaign.
Current Governor Ron DeSantis supports the controversial migrant relocation program known as My Bright Horizon, which has Florida officials under fire.
Since its debut in 2022, the program, which is sponsored by a $10 million budget appropriation from the Florida government, has transported migrants to several states. Critics, like California Governor Gavin Newsom, have called it a political stunt, accusing DeSantis of exploiting vulnerable people to further his goal.
The program now appears to be targeting Arizona. The Border Chronicle reported that the discovery of brochures in a migrant shelter in Nogales, Arizona, raised suspicions about My Bright Horizon and marked the first documented instance of DeSantis’ program in the state.
When speaking with the source, Sobeira Castro, who coordinates asylum seeker transportation in Santa Cruz County, highlighted worries about the program’s credibility, noting that it was unrelated to local government operations. Castro viewed the scenario as questionable, citing the program’s lack of transparency in its functioning.
Access Restoration Services, one of three companies selected by Florida’s Division of Emergency Management to run the relocation program, administers My Bright Horizon, according to public documents. Previous initiatives included other corporations, like Vertol Systems, which received more than $1.5 million for its participation in previous flights. Concerns regarding the program’s ethical and legal bounds remain since migrants continue to be targeted for these flights, often under false pretenses.
The administrator subsequently removed the leaflets from the shelter and expressed concern for the migrants’ well-being.
