According to a statement from the hospital, Schillaci was undergoing treatment to regulate his heartbeat. In 2022, he was diagnosed with colon cancer.

Among his notable strikes were victories against Austria during the group stage, the Republic of Ireland in the quarter-finals, and England in the third-place playoff. Salvatore Schillaci began his football journey at Messina and concluded it in Japan, playing for Júbilo Iwata. During his time with the Italian national team, he managed to score just once outside of the World Cup, accumulating a total of 16 appearances.
