A Border Security Operation In New Mexico Rescues 91 Migrants And Identifies 33 Stash Houses

In a remarkable 12-day operation spearheaded by law enforcement agencies in New Mexico, named “Operation Disruption,” a total of 91 survivors of human trafficking were rescued and 16 individuals were apprehended, as revealed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Governor Lujan Grisham expressed her dedication to saving lives and safeguarding vulnerable individuals through Operation Disruption. She commended the unwavering efforts of law enforcement partners, highlighting the significance of making communities safer and sending a powerful message to those who exploit others.

Between August 17 and August 29, a collaborative operation took place in Dona Ana and Luna Counties, with the participation of multiple agencies including the New Mexico State Police, U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and various local and federal entities.

The governor’s office has reported that the operation yielded the following outcomes:

    • 91 rescues
    • 33 stash houses identified
    • 735 traffic stops
    • 16 arrests

Nine individuals, including a woman in critical condition, were rescued in the desert and are now being treated for their injuries.

Lujan Grisham emphasized that the operation serves as a strong warning to those involved in human trafficking. “Let this be a warning to those who would traffic in human lives: New Mexico will not tolerate such heinous criminal behavior. We are chasing you, and when we find you, we will shut down your unlawful enterprise and imprison you,” she stated.

New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in human trafficking, stating that her administration will not tolerate such despicable criminal behavior. She emphasized that they are actively pursuing those involved and will not hesitate to shut down illegal operations and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. In her own words, she declared, “We are coming after you, and when we find you, we will put an end to your illegal activities and ensure that you are held accountable in jail.”

The number of stash house raids has significantly increased over the past five years, according to the U.S. Border Patrol. In FY 2020, the agency documented a total of 66 raids, but by 2023, this number had surged to 280.
