After enduring a long, scorching summer, we can finally look forward to sweater weather this upcoming weekend. The region will be affected by an area of low pressure on both Friday and Saturday, resulting in gusty winds, potential rainfall, and a slight possibility of snowfall in the high Sierra. While the available moisture may not be abundant, it should be sufficient to generate some precipitation. As we transition into the weekend, temperatures will drop below freezing at Lake Tahoe during the nighttime hours, although the majority of the precipitation is expected to occur north of the lake.
A Red Flag Warning has been issued for northeast California and northwest Nevada until 10pm Thursday night due to low relative humidity values and wind gusts reaching around 40mph. Furthermore, another Red Flag Warning is in effect for the Basin and Range on Friday for similar reasons. As a cold front moves from west to east, it will bring gusty winds along with it. Wind-prone areas, such as Galena into Washoe Valley, may experience wind gusts exceeding 40mph later on Thursday.
This weekend’s travel will not be heavily affected by snow, but it is advisable to wear warm clothing if you are planning to hike in the Sierra. The weather will be rainy and windy, and the lake waters will be choppy. In terms of rainfall, the Reno area can expect less than a tenth of an inch, while northeast California and higher elevations may receive up to a quarter of an inch.
Over the weekend, only a light dusting of snow is expected to accumulate, with most of it sticking to grassy areas rather than the roads. There is a 30% chance of experiencing pure snow, while a 40% chance of encountering a mix of snow and rain is anticipated in the high Sierra. It is worth noting that Mt. Rose Highway, which reaches an elevation above 9000 feet, could potentially see snow due to the cold temperatures. However, the amount of precipitation expected to fall will be minimal.
The weather in Reno is expected to bring a taste of fall on Friday and Saturday. During this time, temperatures will reach the upper 60s and low 70s, accompanied by gusty winds. As the sun sets, the mercury will drop to the 40s and lower 50s, making for cooler nights.
The Reno area can expect favorable conditions for plants this weekend, although Sierra communities may experience hard freezes in the coming mornings. However, next week will see the return of summer weather as a ridge builds back in. This means that temperatures in the nineties will once again be possible.
