Mother raises fentanyl awareness following son’s death

Fentanyl remains a major contributor to the opioid crisis, both nationwide and in our own community. The devastating effects of opioids hit close to home for a Virginia mother who tragically lost her son to addiction.

“Donna Watson fondly remembers her son Troy as a beloved young man – handsome, athletic, and kind-hearted.”

After being involved in a car accident during high school, he developed an addiction to painkillers.

“He fought for over a decade, enduring a grueling battle, and eventually achieved sobriety. He had finally conquered that inner demon,” Watson reflected.

In 2018, however, Troy experienced a relapse and unknowingly consumed what he believed to be Percocet.

The substance was pure fentanyl.

Tragically, he passed away just ten days after celebrating his 31st birthday.

“When you step out onto the street to purchase that drug, you believe you’re acquiring a specific substance, but the person selling it is solely concerned with making money,” Watson explained. “They’re increasingly mixing in fentanyl, which is incredibly inexpensive.”

Many people in Virginia face this reality.

The Virginia Department of Health reported that fentanyl was a contributing factor in over 75% of all fatal overdoses in 2022.

According to the Chesterfield Heroin and Fentanyl Overdose report, there were 50 deaths in 2022, 56 deaths in 2023, and 16 deaths recorded thus far in 2024.

“When you lose a child, people often say that time will heal the pain and make things better. However, I can tell you from personal experience that it doesn’t simply get better on its own. You have to actively find ways to keep yourself occupied and distracted,” she shared.

She became a member of the Virginia Fentanyl and Substance Abuse Awareness group, which successfully managed to secure a billboard placement right across from the local police department. The billboard serves as a powerful warning about the perils associated with fentanyl.

Government buildings throughout the state paid tribute to individuals like Troy by flying their flags at half-staff on Wednesday.

“What I want to prevent is any other mother experiencing the same pain and suffering that I have endured every single day of my life,” expressed Watson passionately. “I am determined to fight this battle not just for myself, but to also provide support and assistance to other families who may be facing similar challenges.”

Donna emphasizes the importance of parents being actively involved in their children’s lives.

She also suggests educating oneself about the dangers of fentanyl and having a conversation about it.
