The NYPD officer, identified by his colleagues on social media as Gregory J. Purvis from the 30th Precinct in Hamilton Heights, parked his car near an apartment building on West 186th Street in Fort George before entering the building, according to police sources.
According to sources, his partner went to the scene later as he had not received any communication from the officer for a while.
As soon as he arrived, he peered through the window and caught sight of the officer lying on the floor.
Police officers rushed into the scene and discovered the injured officer with a gunshot wound to the head, according to sources.
A gun was also found at the scene by the authorities.
