California, USA — California is set to become the next state to allow residents to add their driver’s license or state ID to their iPhone or Google Wallet app, as announced on Thursday.[source:gov.ca.gov]
This digital ID will enable Californians to use their iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android device to securely and conveniently present it at select TSA security checkpoints across the state.
Californians will soon be able to use these new digital options to present their driver’s license or ID card via Google Wallet or Apple Wallet at select businesses, TSA airport security checkpoints, and in certain apps. This convenient feature offers more control over how they share their information.
So far, over 500,000 Californians have added a mobile driver’s license (mDL) to their phones using the California DMV Wallet app. The mDL pilot program is capped at 1.5 million participants.
“We are constantly working towards increasing the accessibility and acceptance of digital licenses and identification cards, all the while prioritizing privacy and security,” commented Steve Gordon, the Director of DMV.
These new capabilities give multiple ways to add and present California driver’s licenses and ID cards using iPhone, Apple Watch, and Android devices. These options are part of the DMV’s broader mobile Driver’s License (mDL) pilot, which launched last year.
“We’re partnering with two iconic California companies – Apple and Google – to provide convenient, private and secure driver’s licenses and ID cards directly on people’s phones. This is a big step in our efforts to better serve all Californians, meeting people where they’re at and with technology people use every day.”
Governor Gavin Newsom
Having an ID in the Apple/Google Wallet or a mobile driver’s license in the DMV Wallet app does not eliminate the need for individuals to carry a physical card, as per the state’s regulations. The purpose of these digital IDs is to facilitate the verification of age and identity at airports and businesses, making the process more convenient.
Before residents completely abandon their wallets, California State Law still mandates carrying a physical ID card.
However, Newsom notes that this new feature will make it easier for Californians to verify their age and identity.
The digital ID will be available in smartphone wallets in the coming weeks.
